The ever increasing demands of the school curriculum make it a challenging learning environment for those with dyslexia and literacy difficulties. All too quickly learners can feel they are being left behind, unable to cope with the reading and literacy demands, which, in turn, affects their self esteem and devalues their appreciation and understanding of their inherent strengths.

A true understanding of dyslexia goes far beyond weak spelling. For pupils in the classroom, it affects:

Reading fluency, accuracy and speed
Spelling - decoding sounds and letters to read and encoding words to spell
Comprehension and understanding of texts and questions
An understanding of the use of grammar and sentence syntax
Numeracy

Writing skills and confidence
Revision and Study Skills
Organisation and time management
Processing and working memory difficulties
Communication skills - both socially and on paper
Vocabulary building - expressive and receptive language skills

Although each child’s dyslexia will present differently, each tuition session will be built on the following fundamental principles:

Sessions will be structured, cumulative and employ multi-sensory and kinaesthetic elements of learning;
Informal assessments will inform the direction of the programme of study;
Assistive Technology and IT will be incorporated for the purposes of over-learning and to embed digital learning as a normal way of working;
Metacognitive approaches to help learners develop their own individual and preferred strategies;
Activities to practise at home (if desired).
Handwriting and touch typing practise (if required);
